Two Services, Two Jobs
DNS hosting runs the nameservers that answer lookup queries for your domain. When someone types your address into a browser, the DNS system checks your nameservers for the correct A record (RFC 1035) and returns the IP address of your web server. Without DNS hosting, nobody can find your site even if the web server is running perfectly.
Web hosting is where your site actually lives. Your HTML files, images, databases, and server-side code sit on a machine that responds to requests from visitors who were directed there by DNS. The web server does not care who provides your DNS, and your DNS does not care who provides your hosting. They communicate through standardised DNS records.
Understanding this separation matters when you troubleshoot. If your domain does not resolve at all, the problem is DNS. If the domain resolves but the page does not load, the problem is web hosting.
Do You Need to Pay for DNS Separately?
In most cases, no. Every domain registrar provides basic DNS hosting as part of your domain registration. You log into the registrar's dashboard, set A records, CNAME records, MX records, and the service is included. For a straightforward website that does not receive millions of daily lookups, this default DNS is sufficient.
Separate or premium DNS hosting becomes relevant when you need faster global resolution times, advanced traffic routing such as geographic load balancing, higher query-per-second capacity, or built-in DDoS protection for the DNS layer itself. These features matter for high-traffic sites and applications where milliseconds of DNS latency affect user experience at scale.
